Located in the heart of Europe, the Czech Republic was the larger part of Czechoslovakia before becoming an independent state on January 1, 1993. Because Prague, the capital, was spared from bombardment in the Second World War, the city has close to 4,000 historic monuments, some of which are more than 1,000 years old.
